The challenge

Farmers waited days for an agronomist to answer simple crop questions, often in a language the guidance wasn't written in.

Field officers could not reach every farmer during critical weeks such as sowing, spraying and harvest. Farmers asked the same questions by phone, often about pests they could show far more easily than describe. Generic chatbots gave confident answers that ignored local crops, seasons and approved products.

What we built

A WhatsApp assistant answering in Urdu and English from vetted guidance, with photo checks for pests and disease.

WhatsApp first
Because that is where farmers already are. No app to install, and voice notes are supported.
Answers grounded in approved material
The assistant retrieves from the organisation's own agronomy guides and spray calendars, and every answer shows which guide it came from. If the guides don't cover a question, it says so and offers a field officer.
Photo checks
Farmers send a photo of a leaf or pest; the assistant describes likely causes from the guides and asks clarifying questions. Anything uncertain goes to a human agronomist.
Urdu and English
Replies come in the language the farmer used.

It shows open questions, escalations and the topics trending in each district this week.

Outcome

Farmers get answers in minutes in their own language, field officers spend their time on the cases that need a visit, and the organisation can see what farmers are struggling with as the season unfolds.
